I’ve been on a green kick lately. Specifically, emerald green. I’ve been implementing the color into so many of my current designs and I just adore it. It’s vibrant, unexpected and has so much classic appeal. A win-win in my book.
My dear friend, Audra Harvey, and I were discussing how perfect a vibrant green goes with grays, blacks and whites. And how lovely it is to use a bold color that is strong but not overwhelming. After our discussion, I moved my black-white entry rug into the dining room and decided to finally paint my dining table base emerald green. I have had the perfect green paint for two years, and a million Pinterest photos screaming for me to take the green plunge. And yet, I just couldn’t get myself to do it. What can I say, I have commitment issues when it comes to my home. ha! But when I saw the black and white contrast in the gray room, I knew I had the perfect opportunity to use a bright green. After painting one section of the table, I was smitten. My only regret is, I wish I had done it sooner.

Wallpaper must be in the air! Last Saturday I wrote about the wallpaper trend and it’s big comeback for my 12th & Broad column. Since then, local, national and international blogs have posted like mad about wallpaper. There hasn’t been a day this week where I have not read about this trending decor element. I love when my mind is tracking simultaneously with other creatives. If you missed Saturday’s post, here is a chance to catch up. Be prepared to swoon…

Wallpaper has made a huge comeback over the years, and it seems that its popularity is elevating to new heights in 2015. Companies are producing stunning collections that can be used indoor and outdoor (yes, outdoor!), in bathrooms and on fireplace walls, on ceilings and as beautiful artwork. No longer are you restricted to a repeat pattern either. One image can drape an entire wall. Companies, like Wall & Deco, Rebel Walls and Calico Wallpaper, are changing the way in how we use and see wallpaper. They believe wallpaper design should not be limited by climate, scale, location or conventional wisdom.

Up until recently, many people in the US shied away from wallcoverings. Due to poor designs in the 1970’s and early 1980’s, pattern on the walls became taboo and everyone wanted a simpler aesthetic. But as of late, wallpaper is pushing its way back into the home. The design concepts today are entirely new, innovative and there is a style for everyone. Wallpaper is no longer seen as a cover-up for blank walls, but as works of art.

I’m a huge fan of wallpaper. I actually jump up and down (and do a little dance) when a client suggests using the decorative paper in their home or office. It’s a bold statement that gives so much personality to a room. Wallpaper can take a generic room and turn it into something quite magical. One wall, or an entire room, and the space is completely transformed.

As of late, I am loving all the new ways in how to use wallpaper. We have come a long way! I never thought it would be possible to dress the outside of a building in wild patterns or one massive image without paint. You can place wallpaper anywhere you choose now, you are only limited by your imagination. Cover an entire room in a panoramic mural, or choose a focal point, like the ceiling or stairwell. Can’t commit to an entire wall? Try framing it and hang it as wall art. Whether your style is traditional, modern or somewhere in between, there is a wallpaper for you. The next time you are considering a new design element for your space, think about wallpaper. Step outside the box, be bold and have a little fun.

If you attended the 2014 Porter Flea Holiday Market last December, you likely saw the stunning geometric baubles displayed throughout the event. I actually stopped dead in my tracks and just stared for a solid ten minutes in the entryway. Who made these gigantic gems?! How did they make them?! And where can I buy them?! I was in serious awe and could not wait to find out more.
I quickly found out it was the dynamic duo, Mandy Pellegrin and Emily Edwards of Craftcourse Nashville . If you haven’t heard about these lovely ladies and their crafting magic, you are missing out. A pair of high energy, charmingly neurotic creatives who are mad about color, retro vibes and modern design. They specialize in making ‘cool things’. Because as they often say, cool things don’t make themselves. Over the top displays to the tiniest of details, these ladies are rocking the party, wedding, workshop and retail scene.
When asked to create a fun display for Porter Flea, the concept was like any of their other events – temporary design. But after Instagram blew up with photos of these geometric baubles and a bidding war began between local retailers over who gets to buy this one set, the ladies knew that they had something special. The geometric baubles had no choice but to go to the marketplace.

Overnight, they re-branded their company and created an online store for their own creations, starting with the geometric baubles. The mobiles are now available for purchase and come in singles, sets and a variety of colors and sizes. They range from $25-70 and can be shipped anywhere in the U.S.
Often asked “what in the world are these baubles good for?!”Their response “Um…what AREN’T they good for?” And I tend to agree. These mobiles would look amazing in modern, retro and even bohemian home décor. For interior design, pair multiple baubles with Edison bulb lights and hang over a dining room table for a beautiful light or create a focal point in your living room with a single strand. I would love to see the ladies at A Beautiful Mess pick up a few and place in their studio. Wouldn’t they look fantastic?!

For parties and weddings, they would look gorgeous as a backdrop to a photo-booth or a little bling to a buffet table or entryway. I love the idea of a black and gold party with the pink or gold mobiles. So flirty and fun.

And don’t get me started on retail displays. My first thought when I saw these mobiles was Kate Spade needs these in her flagship store (see below photos). Or how about Anthropologie? Couldn’t you see them dazzling customers in one of their window displays? The designs, colors and construction are so fresh, and right in line with the 2015 home décor trends. The possibilities are endless, and I am really excited to see how people display them.

So, forget the depressing winter weather and feast your eyes on these bold beauties. Get inspired, throw a party and have fun trying something new in your décor scheme.
